I listen to the baby's sounds. I watch how the baby feeds. I notice how the baby reacts to being held by me. I look at whether the baby settles easily or needs more help. I watch how the baby moves between sleep cycles. I notice whether the baby is uncomfortable, windy, overtired, hungry, unsettled, or simply adjusting to a new person caring for them. Night support can be the difference between surviving the newborn stage and having enough energy to enjoy some of those first moments.
